History
darren and girl
Caritas Creek was founded in 1975 and offered it's first programs at the Mendocino Woodlands.

The environmental education program began in spring of 1976 and the summer camp program opened in summer of 1976. For 9 years the program lived in Mendocino County, and then moved to CYO's Occidental facility in 1985, to better serve the expanding numbers of clientele. Caritas Creek facilitated summer camp and environmental education at CYO Camp in Occidental from 1985 to 2007.

With the support of the governing board, under the leadership of the original founders ("The Creekies"), Caritas Creek is now proud to offer the same amazing program and gifted staff that your kids have grown with over the past 33 years as we've moved and expanded. Now we invite you to join us at our 2008 summer camp site in the Sierra's.

Caritas Creek Environmental Education Program

We're fast approaching summer...and were excited to be operating under our first summer time name - Caritas Creek Summer Camp! You can count on the same Caritas quality program and tradition that we've been providing for over 30 years...at one time in Mendocino, at another time in Occidental...and NOW at Sequoia Lake!

Enjoy the latest information and take a closer look at what we're offering!
Site/Facility
lake with dockCaritas Creek is offering the 2008 summer program at Camp Redwood, an ACA accredited facility owned and managed by the Kings County YMCA, and leased to Caritas Creek for the 2008 summer season. Camp Redwood sits at 5500' of elevation on the shore of Lake Sequioa, an 80 acre lake. The property has 775 acres of ancient forest, blooming flowers, creeks and wildlife, and is adjacent to Kings Canyon National Park, home of the largest trees in the world.

This camp provides access to miles of trails, a canoeing dock, a swimming dock, and an archery range. Campers will share a cabin with 6-7 peers and a staff member. Most meals will be eaten with the entire camp community, inside of a classic log cabin style dining hall, while sitting around the table with their cabin mates. The cabins are located around a central gathering area with a basketball court, a horseshoe pit, a volleyball court, and plenty of benches for people to share community time. Camp Redwood has been providing a space for programs like Caritas Creek Summer Camp since 1922.
Activities
archeryCampers will enjoy all of the traditional camp activities such as swimming from a private dock, canoeing, basketball, nine square, arts & crafts, horse shoes, frisbee games, wilderness adventures, a challenge course, overnights, and campfires. Campers will have the opportunity to see the third largest tree on earth, "The General Grant."

All campers will also get to participate in our unique and more sacred activities such as serendipities, inspirational assemblies, and our beloved celebration; these activities are only found at Caritas Creek.

Staff
staff hugging kidOur staff is made up of 28 outstanding childcare workers chosen from our environmental education program, our previous summer camp programs, and our graduated campers and CIT's, and almost all 2008 staff are alumni of this amazing program. Lead by Summer Camp Director, Erik "Witakae" Oberg, this team will provide leadership to a maximum of 94 campers per session providing a 1:3.5 supervision ratio which exceeds the industry standard.

Based on a program with 33 years of quality programming and tradition, you can be sure that your child is in good hands.

Counselor in Training (C.I.T.)
The tradition of the CIT program continues. CIT Coordinator, Nelson Hernandez, a former Caritas camper from the age of 6 years old, will be there to help high school youth bridge the gap between being a camper and being a staff member. A CIT works side by side with an experienced staff member, learning valuable leadership and childcare skills, while living and working in a camper cabin. CIT's develop long lasting bonds with both their mentors and the children they serve. This program is available to young people between the ages of 16-18. Space in the CIT program is limited this year so act quickly. Contact Nelson at nelson@caritascreek.org.

Financial Aid
Don't let cost keep you from sending your child!

We want to serve every child. If you need help paying the registration fees, call our registrar at (415) 939-1357 to discuss your financial needs so that we can help. But please hurry, campership funds are limited and awarded on a first come, first serve basis.
